Patient Family Advisory Partnership

January 22, 2019

Patient Family Advisory Partnership launched at Headwaters which builds on community involvement in hospital decisions is seeking more members.

ORANGEVILLE, ON – January 22, 2019 – Headwaters Health Care Centre is actively recruiting members of the community to volunteer as Patient Family Advisors (PFAs) building on community involvement that already exists at the hospital. Headwaters’ PFAs work collaboratively with teams at the hospital to include the voice of patients in our planning.

Sharon Hendry, Quality Coordinator leads Headwaters’ PFA. “We currently have 10 Patient  Family Advisors actively working with our teams, and are new in their role being recruited over the past year,” she said.  “We want to expand this very valuable team and aim to double that number if we can by the end of 2019.”

Headwaters wants to build and foster relationships with patients, families and caregivers to ensure their needs are being met and we understand what matters to them.

Over the past year, PFAs have been matched with a specific need at the hospital and their experience. So far, PFAs have given input on improvements to the Emergency Department, being involved in recruitment committees for key hospital positions, provided feedback on parking and input on a recent renovation of the dialysis program to name a few.

Healthcare is a collaborative partnership between the patient, their family and the healthcare team.  As much as one may know from being at the bedside, being in the bed or in the chair is an entirely different experience.  At some point or the other, one of us will take our place as a patient or family member needing care.” Eileen, a PFA.

“For well over 10 years, both me and my family, at one time or another, have had to visit the Emergency Department at Headwaters Healthcare Centre. We are lucky to have such a medical institution within our community. I decided to become a PFA in to share my experience with them and provide insight into possible opportunities to further enhance the experience,” said Ingrid, a PFA.

Quick Facts about PFAs at Headwaters:

·        PFAs are members of the community, who have had an experience with the hospital as either a patient or family member over the past three years.

·        PFAs are volunteers and participate depending on their availabilty and interest.

·        PFAs must be willing to share their lived experience with the team and share a commitment to improving the patient and family experience for others.

·        Headwaters’ goal is to have a PFA on each hospital committee within two years.

We invite anyone interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer patient family advisor to  complete an expression of interest form found on our website and participate in an interview with Sharon Hendry, Quality Coordinator and Patient Family Advisor Lead.  http://www.headwatershealth.ca/patientrelations.
