Ontario Breaks Ground on Long-Term Care Home in Stratford

News Release
July 17, 2025

New home will provide 288 modern long-term care beds to the community

STRATFORD — Construction is underway to redevelop peopleCare Stratford, a 288-bed long-term care home in Stratford, Ontario. This project is a recipient of the Construction Funding Subsidy top-up and is part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario by creating good jobs and building for the future, while ensuring long-term care residents get the quality of care and quality of life they need and deserve.

“Our government has a plan to improve long-term care and a key part of that plan is building modern, safe and comfortable homes,” said Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Minister of Long-Term Care. “Today marks a significant milestone for the community of Stratford. When construction is complete, 288 residents will have a modern, comfortable place to call home.”

The new peopleCare Stratford long-term care home will incorporate modern design features including nine Resident Home Areas (RHAs), each creating a more intimate and familiar living space for up to 32 residents. RHAs include both standard and private resident rooms with access to dedicated balconies. The home's amenities and services include a chapel, therapy rooms, outdoor paths, dining and activity lounges and a barber/salon.

peopleCare Stratford long-term care home is expected to welcome its first residents in 2027.

This project is part of the Ontario government’s continued progress toward its commitment to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province, as outlined in the 2025 Ontario Budget: A Plan to Protect Ontario. The government is fixing long-term care to ensure residents get the quality of care and quality of life they need and deserve. The plan to improve care for long-term care residents is built on four pillars: staffing and care; quality and enforcement; building modern, safe, and comfortable homes; and connecting seniors with faster, more convenient access to the services they need.

Quick Facts

  • As of May 2025, 147 projects representing a total of 23,977 new and redeveloped beds are completed, under construction, or have ministry approval to construct.
  • Ontario will also be launching a new construction funding support program to ensure long-term care operators and builders have additional flexibility and support to continue Ontario’s historical level of construction. Building more modern, safe and comfortable homes for our residents is part of the Government of Ontario’s Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021.
  • The province is taking innovative steps to get long-term care homes built, including modernizing its funding model, selling unused lands with the requirement that long-term care homes be built on portions of the properties, and leveraging hospital-owned land to build urgently needed homes in large urban areas.
