Ontario Breaks Ground on Expanded Emergency Department in Hamilton

New expanded emergency department will connect more people in Hamilton to high-quality care closer to home
HAMILTON — The Ontario government has officially broken ground on the new and expanded emergency department at Hamilton General Hospital. Supported by a $25 million investment, the new emergency department will feature 8,500 square feet of additional emergency space to better serve the more than 50,000 visitors it receives every year. The project is part of the province’s plan to protect Ontario’s health-care system by investing $64 billion in more than 50 major hospital projects over the next 10 years.
“Our government is making historic investments in health-care infrastructure to protect Ontario’s health-care system and connect more people to the care they need, where and when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “We are excited to celebrate the groundbreaking of this new and expanded emergency department at Hamilton General Hospital, which, once complete, will bring vital emergency care capacity to the Hamilton region and help more families access the right care, in the right place, for generations to come.” The new state-of-the-art emergency department at Hamilton General Hospital is expected to be completed by 2030 and will include a larger ambulance off-loading area, a new triage/rapid assessment and observation area, as well as improvements to existing facilities to improve care and reduce wait times for patients. Once completed, new and updated services in the emergency department will include: - Upgraded resuscitation area to provide faster life-saving care for patients
- Additional treatment rooms, nursing stations and staff work areas to help care teams serve more patients, faster
- Improved patient navigation throughout the emergency department and between hospital services to reduce patient wait times
- Better sightlines across patient care areas, supporting a safer and more patient-centred environment
- Enhanced infection prevention and control measures, including airborne isolation rooms

Quick Facts - Canadian construction company Chart Construction has been awarded the contract.
- Hamilton General Hospital is home to the regional trauma centre serving 2.5 million people in Hamilton and the surrounding area. The hospital provides leading regional programs including cardiac, vascular, neurosurgical, stroke, trauma and burn care.
- In November 2025, Ontario celebrated the grand opening of Hamilton Health Sciences new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby, which delivered on a key government promise to connect more people in West Niagara to more convenient, high-quality hospital care, closer to home.
- Over the next 10 years, Ontario is investing approximately $64 billion in major health infrastructure. This is part of the government’s plan to get shovels in the ground on more than 50 major hospital projects across the province, which will deliver approximately 3,000 new hospital beds to enhance access to quality care and build a connected, people-first health-care system.
- The Ontario government is investing over $281 million in 2026-27 to support critical infrastructure upgrades and repairs at 126 hospitals and 67 community health-care facilities across the province, a 9.4 per cent increase from the previous year.
- In 2026-27, Hamilton Health Sciences received $8,156,838 million through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund, to support the critical infrastructure needs of its hospitals
