Program Leader: Jennifer Bozzo

In this weekly program led by certified Zumba leader, members of all ages, physicality, and gender are invited to engage in a form of artistic physical expression that pairs whole body movements with music. Designed to promote physical, mental and emotional stimulation, as well as providing an invigorating session of exercise, this program guides participants to a safe space of flow, challenge and connectedness. It is important to note that previous dance experience is not necessary; this class can be modified for anyone of any level or experience.

What to Expect at a Session

Within this welcoming and encouraging environment, sessions begin with a gentle warm up of the whole body, then progress to a lower-intensity version of the typical Zumba class, designed to meet the needs of our members. With a reminder to members to stay relaxed and attuned to their bodies, the program leader guides the group through a series of simple, easy to follow movements, that slowly build into more complex patterns that challenge the brain and body in gentle ways. Sessions are offered weekly for 60 minutes. Some classes may vary slightly according to the style of the program leader.

Benefits and Impact

Dance has been widely reported to have an important role in the health of some people living with cancer. Studies of dance programs on cancer survivors and patients suggest that dance can improve many health-related outcomes including quality of life, fatigue, stress, pain, and social functioning (Boing et al., 2017Karkou et al., 2021Sturm et al., 2014). In addition, the American College of Sports Medicine cites strong evidence that moderate intensity aerobic exercise — such as dancing — can improve fatigue, anxiety, and physical function in their exercise guidelines for cancer survivors (Campbell et al., 2019).
