Hours: Service Daily 24 hours
Service Description: Patients that require emergency or urgent care related to a serious injury, illness or condition should visit the emergency department. This is especially important if the patient is experiencing symptoms and have an existing chronic condition, including heart disease, kidney disease, or diabetes

Patients who need care for the following symptoms should visit the emergency department immediately:

  • chest pain or abdominal pain
  • shortness of breath
  • pregnancy-related emergencies
  • internal bleeding
  • numbness or weakness in arms or hands
  • major trauma
  • mental health issues
  • injuries or illnesses of infants six months of age and younger
  • seizures or stroke symptoms

Medical Assessment Units (MAU) - Both Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General Hospital have opened MAUs for emergency patients who are expected to be treated and discharged with 48 hours

Application: No referral required * patients need their Ontario Health Card and a second piece of photo ID * children need their birth certificate and their Ontario Health Card
Eligibility / Target Population: People who need medical care for serious illnesses and injuries, emotional distress, or sexual assault * older adults may be eligible for follow-up support
